More information about SpongeBob SquarePants

Dive into the depths of the ocean with SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, and Squidward for the adventure of a lifetime in this inventive reimagining of the Nickelodeon cartoon, complete with a brand new story for Broadway. It’s just an ordinary Bikini Bottom day until things get turned upside down, and the simple sponge must jump to the rescue. When a volcano threatens to destroy the underwater world, SpongeBob sets out to save the day. However, villainous Plankton and Karen are up to no good with a secret scheme to turn the residents of Bikini Bottom against each other, in the middle of a chaotic turn of events.

Under Tina Landau’s innovative direction, with a book by Kyle Jarrow and Landau, the Broadway bow of “SpongeBob SquarePants” uses inanimate objects such as hula hoops, bicycles and balloons to create an epic underworld complete with high-belting whales, tap-dancing squids, and a 1990s-inspired boy band named the Electric Skates.

All ages 4+ Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

What to watch for

Ethan Slater’s favorite “SpongeBob” episode is “Bubble Buddy,” when SpongeBob SquarePants befriends a bubble — even though everyone else looks down upon it.

Lilli Cooper had never taken a karate lesson before her audition. In fact, when she was asked to improvise for her audition, she pulled a pencil out of her hair and pretended she was going to chop it in half, but then just broke it on her leg.

Before landing the role, Gavin Lee was not a big fan of the TV show. He only watched about ten episodes before starting performances.

The show’s score features pop artists like Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, and more, and more than a dozen artists are nominated for a Tony Award for the show’s score.
