More information about Wolf Play

Wolf Play centers around Jeenu, an adopted South Korean boy played by a puppet. His first adoptive parents abandon him, listing him for adoption online. Jeenu finds a new home with queer parents, Robin and Ash, and discloses that he is not a boy but rather a wolf. His story delves into trauma, coping mechanisms, parenthood, and the family we choose for ourselves. As Jeenu says, “Wolves suck at being alone. Wolves need family.”

In a creative move to offset the sensitive topic of child abandonment, playwright Hansol Jung envisioned Jeenu being portrayed by a puppet. Puppet designer Amanda Villalobos designed Jeenu for Wolf Play. Jeenu is a fairly simple yet evocative puppet made from wood, cardboard, and bungee cords.

The Shotgun Players company’s production of Wolf Play is directed by Elizabeth Carter, a director and actor in the Bay Area. She has won a Theatre Bay Area Award and an award for Best Local Play from Broadway World for her work.

A member of the Ma-Yi Theatre Writers’ Lab, playwright Hansol Jung has written a handful of comedies and dramas, including No More Sad Things, Among the Dead, Wild Goose Dreams, and Cardboard Piano. Jung often addresses difficult topics in her plays, including religious intolerance, love, and betrayal. In her work as a translator, Jung has translated over 30 English musicals into Korean.

What to Watch For

  • The word “play” in Wolf Play’s title does not refer to the work’s genre rather to how children and even wolves play with each other. Play is central to the show's energy and serves as a release and coping mechanism for the main character Jeenu.
  • Operated by an actor on stage, puppet Jeenu is full of life. Wearing blue tennis shoes, Jeenu is equipped with magnets to create a sense of independent movement by allowing him to grab stage props. Jeenu’s basic design is mirrored in the simplicity of the set, complete with cotton balls and wooden toys.
  • Shotgun Players’ productions offer accessibility options for guests. On select dates, Wolf Play performances can be live-streamed by audience members unable to attend the live show. Closed-caption videos on demand are also available.
