The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory comes alive with over 25 model trains, zipping among awe-inspiring recreations of over 200 famous New York landmarks and the garden's abundant, beautiful plants. Plus, venture outside to the newest addition to the Train Show, where the trains go through picturesque mountainscapes.
Go during the day for access to the Conservatory, outdoor gardens, Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, and the NYBG's Tram Tour, which offers an overview of the garden's 250-acre property, history, and wildlife. More information about Holiday Train Show
The Holiday Train Show was first created in 1992 by Applied Imagination, a design company founded by Paul Busse and led by his daughter, Laura Busse Dolan. The company still designs and builds the show each year.
The event features replicas of American steam engines, 19th-century streetcars, and modern passenger and freight trains, and more, capturing centuries of transportation and city history in one room.
What to watch for
- The trains run on a total half-mile-plus of track between the indoor and outdoor areas.
- The landmarks represented in the Holiday Train Show display include the Statue of Liberty, New York Public Library, Saks Fifth Avenue, and more.
- Staying true to the NYBG's roots, pieces of plants are incorporated into the landmarks. A leaf from a plant called the enormous grandleaf seagrape, for example, is used as the roof of the TWA Hotel model.
- Don't forget to look up! Trains also run overhead on replicas of New York's bridges.
