About Where the Mountain Meets the Sea

From acclaimed writer Jeff Augustin (The New Englanders at MTC, The Morning Show) comes a timely story of a son’s quest to connect with his father. Lyrical story-telling and live folk songs from The Bengsons weave a tale of searching and longing, family and legacy. A Haitian immigrant travels from Miami to California on a once-in-a-lifetime road trip. Years later, his son makes the same journey in reverse. Along the way, blurring the lines of time, these two finally discover common ground and make a connection that has eluded them for decades. Directing is Princess Grace Award winner Joshua Kahan Brody.

Where the Mountain Meets the Sea was commissioned by and premiered in the 2020 Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville.

Tell Me More

Manhattan Theatre Club opens its Off-Broadway season with Where the Mountain Meets the Sea, starring Chris Myers and Billy Eugene Jones. Get Where the Mountain Meets the Sea tickets on TodayTix.

Where the Mountain Meets the Sea is a play about a father and a son who travel thousands of miles to connect with each other. Jean, after immigrating from Haiti, makes a journey from Miami to California. Years later, his son Jonah makes the reverse journey, from California to Miami. That shared experience, and the newfound interest in folk music each discovers along the way, brings these two men together after they'd struggled to find common ground for decades.

Where the Mountain Meets the Sea premiered in 2020 at the Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana Festival of New American Plays. However, the show only played one performance before the pandemic shuttered it. Where the Mountain Meets the Sea in New York, therefore, is not a world-premiere production, but the show's first full-length run.

Six years before Where the Mountain Meets the Sea off Broadway, playwright Jeff Augustin and director Joshua Kahan Brody last collaborated on The Last Tiger in Haiti, which made its world premiere in California. That show also has folk elements, drawing on Haitian folklore.

They've teamed up with folk music duo The Bengsons for Where the Mountain Meets the Sea. Abigail and Shaun Bengson have composed music for two previous Off-Broadway shows — New York Theatre Workshop's Hundred Days and Ars Nova's The Lucky Ones — and released several singles and EPs. They will play their own compositions live at Where the Mountain Meets the Sea off Broadway.

What to Watch For

  • Where the Mountain Meets the Sea has a similar premise as another production in MTC's Off-Broadway season, the best we could (a family tragedy), about a father-daughter road trip gone awry. There's a theme here!
  • Billy Eugene Jones returns off Broadway after starring in On Sugarland at New York Theatre Workshop and Fat Ham at The Public Theater last season.
  • Chris Myers was also on the New York stage last season, as part of the Greek chorus in the Tony-nominated How I Learned to Drive on Broadway.
  • Brody has won a Princess Grace Award, as well as an Excellence in Directing prize from the NY Fringe festival, where he directed Fourteen Flights.
  • A cast album of one of The Bengsons's other Off-Broadway shows, Hundred Days, is available to stream online for those looking to get a taste of their theatrical folk sound.
