RICHARD III kicks off the 60th anniversary season of Free Shakespeare in the Park, an initiative by The Public Theater to present Shakespeare's classics to a broad audience. Enter the Lottery for free RICHARD III tickets on TodayTix.
Shakespeare in the Park performances take place at the Delacorte Theater in the heart of Central Park. The outdoor venue allows you to grab a snack or a drink and experience theatre under the stars. Each summer, The Public Theater puts on two Shakespeare productions, often with a modern or even musical twist to let audiences experience the Bard's work in a new, accessible way. And in keeping with the goal of accessibility, tickets to all Shakespeare in the Park shows are free and distributed both by the TodayTix Lottery and in person across the five boroughs.
RICHARD III stars Black Panther actress Danai Gurira in the villainous title role. Richard will stop at nothing to become king and stay king — he cheats, kills, and even changes the structure of the government to do so. All the while, though, Richard uses his charm and speaking skills to keep his kingdom on his side and hide what he's really doing behind the scenes.
What to Watch For
- Tony nominee Robert O'Hara directs the RICHARD III play. He's had a busy season: he helmed the encore engagement of Slave Play on Broadway and an Off-Broadway production of Long Day's Journey into Night this past winter.
- Gurira is a Public Theater regular. She previously performed in a Shakespeare in the Park production of Measure for Measure in 2016 and, earlier, premiered her play Eclipsed in The Public Theater's regular 2009 season. The show transferred to Broadway and became the first Broadway show with an all-Black female cast and creative team.
- Shakespeare in the Park was started by the Public's founder, Joseph Papp, and has always been free. It used to be called the New York Shakespeare Festival, though, and performances were originally staged on the Lower East Side.
- The Delacorte was actually built specifically for Shakespeare in the Park. The first show there was The Merchant of Venice in 1962; George C. Scott and James Earl Jones starred.
- Following RICHARD III in the Shakespeare in the Park season is a musical version of As You Like It adapted by Shaina Taub. She just starred as Alice Paul in another musical she created, Suffs, at the Public this past spring.
