About Epiphany

CRITIC’S PICK! "HILARIOUS AND HEARTBREAKING! SEE IT!” –Maya Phillips, The New York Times

"This amazing achievement is an enormous pleasure to watch!" –Robert Hofler, The Wrap

An uncanny evening. Snow falls softly. An eager host gathers old friends to try and resuscitate a forgotten tradition. But when the guest of honor is unusually late, the group becomes unmoored, craving answers. And there might not be enough wine, or goose, or time to fend off the long-neglected questions that now haunt their souls…

More information about Epiphany

A dinner party takes a dark turn in Epiphany, the latest play from Brian Watkins. Get Epiphany tickets on TodayTix now.

Epiphany is a play about old friends, old traditions, and new revelations. The show centers on a dinner party on a snowy night, where the host has eagerly invited a group of friends over in the hopes of bringing back a tradition that's gone by the wayside. The tradition centers on a particular guest, though, who is late. Very late. The question of that guest's whereabouts is but one of the many questions the group now has to worry about, which they've put off wondering for a long time.

Watkins's other works include plays titled My Daughter Keeps Her Hammer, Evergreens, Into The Earth With You, Wyoming, High Plains, and A Scavenge. These have been performed in workshops and at festivals around the world including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, the Galway International Arts Festival in Ireland, and the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. Epiphany off Broadway marks Watkins's debut show with Lincoln Center Theater.

What to Watch For

  • The LCT production of Epiphany is the play's New York premiere. Its world premiere was in Ireland at Druid Theatre.
  • Epiphany is being staged at LCT's Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, which has seating on three sides of the stage. You might feel like you're all sitting around the dinner table with the actors!
  • Dinner party dramas like Epiphany are a theatre staple. A recent hit in this genre is Stephen Karam's The Humans, set at a family dinner in Manhattan where the Blake family quarrels over their issues related to health, spirituality, aging, and loneliness. The play was a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony winner, and it was just made into a 2021 movie featuring Beanie Feldstein, Amy Schumer, Jayne Houdyshell, and more.
  • Drama Desk Award-nominated director Tyne Rafaeli is having a busy Off-Broadway season. In fall 2021, she directed Selling Kabul at Playwrights Horizons, and the show was a 2022 Pulitzer finalist.
  • Rafaeli is also making a return to Lincoln Center with Epiphany, having directed Power Strip there in 2019.
