More information about Wish You Were Here

Fresh off the acclaimed run of her play English, Sanaz Toossi presents another world premiere off Broadway: Wish You Were Here. Get Wish You Were Here tickets on TodayTix.

Wish You Were Here is a play set in 1978 Iran, when protests broke out that would soon lead to the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the fall of the country's monarchy. But in those early days, one close-knit group of women is just trying to hold it together and hold on to some normalcy amid the growing unrest. They tell jokes, plan weddings, and try to take their minds off the inevitable.

But the inevitable happens: The violence grows worse, and the friends are forced apart as they each make a choice to either stay and weather the turmoil, or emigrate to a new land. Either way, they face losing their home as they know it, and Wish You Were Here explores the impact each women's decision has on their lives and friendships.

Toossi's play was set to make its world premiere at the 2020 Williamstown Theatre Festival, but the production was canceled amid the pandemic. Now, Playwrights Horizon is instead mounting the first full production of Wish You Were Here off Broadway.

What to Watch For

  • Toossi, an Iranian American playwright, often writes about the Iranian experience. English, her other Off-Broadway play this season (jointly produced by Roundabout and Atlantic Theater Companies), is also set in Iran, and follows the impact that learning English has on four students in an adult English-language class.
  • English and Wish You Were Here share some themes, but they also share an actor! Marjan Neshat, who played the teacher Marjan in English, now plays Nazanin in Wish You Were Here.
  • Toossi's play was an award winner before even having its professional premiere, earning the Edgerton Foundation New Play Award in 2020.
  • Wish You Were Here also shares themes of home and displacement with The Vagrant Trilogy, Mona Mansour's play going up at The Public Theater in April. That show follows a Palestinian scholar who, while away in London, must decide whether to stay there as a refugee or return to his newly war-torn homeland when it erupts into violence of its own.
