About The Skin of Our Teeth on Broadway

Nominated for six Tony Awards® including Best Direction of a Play. In the 5,000 years they’ve been married, George and Maggie Antrobus have survived wars, plagues, floods, and everything in between. Now they're running low on food – and a massive glacier is headed toward their New Jersey home. An epic, timely comedy about the endurance of human spirit, Thornton Wilder’s THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH follows one “everyfamily” through the great struggles and triumphs of the human experience. Led by innovative director Lileana Blain-Cruz in a production that speaks directly to our current moment, this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, with additional material by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, is a profound reminder that life is always worth living – no matter how difficult things get.

More information about The Skin of Our Teeth on Broadway

Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth is a thrilling whirlwind of disaster, as it follows a family through a war-torn world, reckoning with the society that perpetuates both the destruction and reconstruction of humanity, time and time again. In Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth play, every time the Antrobus family thinks that the human race has finally saved itself, they are brought to the brink of extinction once again. Encountering catastrophes like an ice age, a flood, and a great war, It’s almost like an apocalyptic Groundhog Day – but does the cycle ever end?

Wilder’s beloved preceding play, Our Town, tackles a similar topic, but in a more subtle way: both plays feature family as a central figure. While Our Town primarily focuses on the timeline of one family, from past to present, The Skin of Our Teeth serves as a thought-provoking foil, scrambling the most devastating events of history into a non-linear fiasco as the Antrobus family perseveres through it all.

Obie Award-winning director Lileana Blain-Cruz leads The Skin of our Teeth on Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater. In addition to Wilder's original words, there’s also extra content in The Skin of our Teeth in 2022 courtesy of playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, who contributes additional materials to the script.

What to Watch For

  • The Skin of Our Teeth on Broadway arrives just in time for the 125th anniversary of Thornton Wilder’s birth, bringing forth an opportunity for contemplation of what The Skin of Our Teeth and Wilder’s other works mean to modern audiences today.
  • All of the characters in The Skin of Our Teeth represent archetypes from mythology and history.
  • Wilder introduces a less structured idea of the progression of time: rather than viewing it as progressing forward from one event to another, The Skin of Our Teeth suggests time operates with a cyclical pattern.
  • With a diverse cast, the Broadway revival of The Skin of Our Teeth now has the opportunity to authentically represent American society, which much of the play allegorizes.
  • Branden Jacobs-Jenkins often tackles existentialism in his works (Everybody, for example), and he will surely bring that perspective to The Skin of Our Teeth!
  • In 2018, Lileana Blain-Cruz was the recipient of the Lincoln Center Theater’s Emerging Artist Award. Now, just four years later, she is directing a Lincoln Center Theater production on Broadway.
