About Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody

Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody is a hilarious new musical that follows nine quirky, questionable couples looking for love across the pond, and even 16 years after the movie premiere, we still ask ourselves these questions every Christmas – Is love... Falling for your secretary when you are Prime Minster? Falling for your secretary when you are married to Emma Thompson? Falling for the maid after your wife cheats on you? Falling for your best friend’s wife and showing up with poster boards? Whether you love Love Actually or love to hate Love Actually or have never seen Love Actually, you will actually love this musical! Get ready for awkward meet cutes, over-the-top grand gestures, and lots and lots of love, actually.

More information about Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody

Following the premiere of Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody in New York in 2019, the show is now back for its second engagement (pun intended) in the city with much of the original cast. Get Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody tickets on TodayTix.

Like the beloved romantic comedy film, the Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody musical follows nine couples whose lives intertwine at — among other venues including a jewelry store, a wedding and a Christmas play — Heathrow Airport in London in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The Prime Minister falls for a member of his staff, a once-happily committed man finds a new love after being cheated on, a rock star gets together with his manager, and two film actors timidly enter a relationship after easily being passionate toward each other on screen. That’s just the half of it. The show is about heartbreak, desire, and the holiday spirit, but as the title suggests, there’s plenty of love, actually.

The Love Actually film premiered in 2003 to mixed reviews, but it nonetheless received two Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay. Audiences took to it much more than the critics too, and soon enough, the film became a modern Christmas classic. Japanese, Polish, Hindi, and Dutch films have all been based on Love Actually, and the musical parody is but the latest stage adaptation after Love Actually Live, a concert performance of the film’s songs accompanied by movie footage. Since premiering in New York, Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody has also debuted in Chicago. Get tickets to Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody Off-Broadway now.

What to Watch For

  • You’ll see some of the most iconic scenes from the film in Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody, such as Mark showing up with a boombox and posters to declare his love for Juliet, and Karen opening up a Joni Mitchell CD as her Christmas gift rather than the elegant necklace she expected. In this iteration, these moments are all set to song!
  • Some of those songs include "The Lament of Laura Linney," "Keira Knightley Actually," "A Joni Mitchell CD? (For Your Continued Emotional Education)," and "The 11 O'Clock Grand Gesture Number."
  • Get ready to carol! There are also plenty of classic Christmas songs featured in the film, including “White Christmas” and “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Maybe you’ll hear them in the musical too!
  • Does the show sound familiar? Love Actually? The Unauthorized Musical Parody has a book by Bob and Tobly McSmith, the same creators behind The Office: A Musical Parody and Friends! The Musical Parody. British composer Basil Winterbottom wrote the music.
  • “Love Actually the Red-Nosed Short Film” has something of a ring to it! Richard Curtis, the original film’s writer and director, wrote a sequel to Love Actually called Red Nose Day Actually, which premiered on BBC One in 2017.
