About Letters Of Suresh

In Letters of Suresh, playwright Rajiv Joseph reveals intimate mysteries through a series of letters between strangers, friends, daughters, and lovers — many with little in common but a hunger for human connection. Sending their hopes and dreams across oceans and years, they seek peace in one another while dreaming of a city once consumed by the scourge of war. A companion piece to Joseph’s play Animals Out of Paper, Letters of Suresh, directed by May Adrales, is the latest work from the Pulitzer Prize-short listed playwright hailed as “wonderfully daring, imaginative, and compassionate” (The New York Times).

More information about Letters Of Suresh

Acclaimed playwright Rajiv Joseph, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his Broadway debut Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, returns to New York with a powerful and imaginative new play. Letters of Suresh kicks off a thrilling new season at Second Stage Theater, a hotbed of daring new work. Letters of Suresh tickets are available now on TodayTix. A group of friends, strangers, lovers, and children exchange a series of letters that reveal the intimate bonds connecting this far-flung group — many of whom will never meet. Letters of Suresh traces connections across not just oceans but even generations between individuals who share the same hopes and dreams. This powerful new work explores the universal desire for human connection.

The Letters of Suresh play is a companion piece to Joseph’s 2008 work Animals Out of Paper, which also traced an unlikely human connection — in that case, between a depressed origamist and a young teenager with a passion for the field named Suresh. Ben Brantley declared Animals out of Paper “alternately wrenching and funny” in The New York Times, praising Joseph’s “observant, pitch-perfect script.”

Second Stage staged Animals out of Paper at their Uptown space, only Joseph’s second New York production at the time. Now the follow-up reopens Second Stage’s larger off-Broadway space as the company returns to its programming of exciting, timely work by living American writers. What to Watch For

  • Letters of Suresh is the first production to play Second Stage’s Tony Kiser Theater, the 296-seat space the company has operated since 1999, since the theater shutdown.
  • Rajiv Joseph’s work was last seen in New York at Atlantic Theater Company, which staged his epic historical drama Describe the Night in 2017.
  • Screen legend Robin Williams starred in Joseph’s play Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo on Broadway in 2011. Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo ultimately proved to be Williams’ final stage credit.
  • Letters of Suresh director May Adrales is artistic director of The Lark, a new play development think tank and laboratory which shepherds essential new works by exciting voices—works like this very play.
  • The character of Suresh who appeared in Joseph’s play Animals Out of Paper will return in Letters of Suresh, though a new actor takes on the role. Kellie Overbey, who appeared in Animals out of Paper as Ilana, will also star in Letters of Suresh.
