About Clyde's on Broadway

In this stirring new play from the team of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and director Kate Whoriskey (Ruined, Sweat), a truck stop sandwich shop offers its formerly incarcerated kitchen staff a shot at reclaiming their lives. Even as the shop’s callous owner tries to keep them under her thumb, the staff members are given purpose and permission to dream by their shared quest to create the perfect sandwich. You’ll want a seat at the table for this funny, moving, and urgent play. It’s an example of Nottage’s “genius for bringing politically charged themes to life by embodying them in ordinary characters living ordinary lives” (The Wall Street Journal).

Starring Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black, In Treatment), Ron Cephas Jones (This is Us, Truth Be Told), Reza Salazar (Sweat), and Kara Young in her Broadway debut.

More information about Clyde's on Broadway

At truck stop joint Clyde’s, the employees want purpose and permission to dream. But most of all, they want to create the perfect sandwich. In new Broadway comedy Clyde’s, the formerly incarcerated line cooks dream of escaping their callous owner and realize that mastering the art of sandwich making is their one and only chance. Clyde’s tickets are available now.

Clyde’s is a play by two-time Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage, who returns to Broadway following her 2017 smash-hit play Sweat. Nottage again crafts an empathetic and unflinchingly honest look at the people our society leaves behind, and how they build their own future. Clyde’s on Broadway is also inspired by the residents of Reading, Pennsylvania, where Sweat is set.

Lynn Nottage has been praised by Style Weekly as “the American playwright most in touch with the defining importance of work.” Nottage conducts detailed and meticulous research for her plays, traveling across the United States to conduct interviews with working Americans.

Writing in The Wall Street Journal, critic Terry Teachout praised Nottage’s timely work as “plays that put raw flesh on the exit polls.” In his New York Times review of Sweat, critic Ben Brantley declared Nottage “a justly acclaimed dramatist of ambitious scope and fierce focus.”

Clyde’s premiered at the Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis in 2019. Second Stage presents the New York premiere of Clyde’s at the company’s Broadway home, The Hayes Theater. The production is supported by the Art for Justice Fund, an organization which works to mass incarceration and underlying racial bias through art and advocacy.

What to Watch For

  • Clyde’s in New York reopens Second Stage Theater’s Hayes Theater as the company’s first Broadway show since the shutdown in March 2020.
  • Lynn Nottage is the only woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice, first for her play Ruined in 2009 and then for Sweat in 2017.
  • Nottage spent two years interviewing residents of Reading, Pennsylvania as research for both Sweat and Clyde's.
  • Clyde's was originally titled Floyd’s for its Minneapolis run in 2019. Nottage changed the title and did rewrites to avoid unintended associations with George Floyd, who was murdered by police in May 2020.
  • Nottage re-teams with director Kate Whoriskey, who also directed Sweat both at The Public Theater and on Broadway.
