More information about Trevor the Musical

He’s coming into his own — and stepping into the spotlight. The New York premiere of Trevor: The Musical is happening off Broadway at the Daryl Roth Theatre with a whole lot of pizzazz. Get Trevor: The Musical tickets on TodayTix.

The Trevor musical is based on a 1994 film by Celeste Lecesne and directed by Peggy Rajski. Like in the film, the musical’s 13-year-old titular character doesn’t fit in among his peers in 1981 suburban America. He is a diehard Diana Ross fan, he loves performing in school plays — and he’s gay. His parents try to ignore these qualities and his friends bully him, making Trevor struggle even more with his identity. The show, with compassionate humor, sees Trevor finding his own courage to be proud of who he is.

The new Trevor: The Musical Off-Broadway production features an entirely different creative team from the film, helmed by Marc Bruni as director. Dan Collins provides the book and lyrics for Julianne Wick Davis’s score, and Joshua Prince choreographs. Their musical was first staged at the Writers Theatre in Glencoe, Illinois in 2017 before making the move to New York.

What to Watch For

  • 13-year-old Holden William Hagelberger, who stars as Trevor, is making his New York theatre debut. Hailing from Sugarland, Texas, he was chosen through a virtual casting call that received more than 1,300 submissions.
  • The 1994 short film Trevor, which the musical is based on, tied for the 1995 Academy Award for Best Short Subject. Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life took home the award alongside Trevor.
  • Trevor is the namesake of nonprofit organization The Trevor Project. The organization operates a crisis hotline where LGBT youth can seek 24/7 mental health and suicide prevention care from professionals. The film’s writer (Celeste Lecesne), director (Peggy Rajski), and producer (Randy Stone) founded TTP in 1998 when they searched for such a hotline to share during a showing of Trevor on HBO and found none existed.
  • Director Marc Bruni is perhaps best known for directing Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. He helmed the show’s Broadway, West End, UK tour, and Australia productions. The musical won Tony, Olivier, and Grammy Awards, and Bruni won the Helpmann Award and Green Room Award for Best Direction of a Musical in Australia for his work.
  • Trevor is one of multiple recent musicals to highlight the stories of LGBT youth. Trevor shares themes with shows like The Prom, which premiered on Broadway in 2018, and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, a 2017 West End musical. Conversely from Trevor, those two shows began as stage musicals and were later turned into films.
