We couldn’t help but wonder… how can the hit HBO series “Sex and the City” be recreated by one woman? Comic Kerry Ipema has the answer at “One Woman Sex and the City: A Parody of Love, Friendship and Shoes.” In this hilarious take on the beloved rom-com, Ipema plays all the parts — including Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Samantha Jones, and Miranda Hobbes.
In the one-woman show, written by Ipema and TJ Dawe completely from memory, Ipema covers all of the series’ iconic moments. Expect nods to the “naked dress” Carrie wears on her first date with Mr. Big, the Post-It note breakup, the tantric sex demonstration, and more. Audiences are also invited to take part in the action by writing down their dating deal-breakers and wildest dating dilemmas for use by Ipema, who improvises moments into the evening.
Recommended for mature audiences. Children ages 4 and up allowed in the theater.
Kerry Ipema takes on a total of 24 characters in the show.
Cowriter TJ Dawe also serves as the show’s director and stage manager.
Writing the show from memory helped in making the piece enjoyable for the audience. “What was fun about it was remembering what iconic moments stuck out to us,” says Ipema. “Because the audience that comes and sees the show is going to be like us, people who remember it for what it was.”
Writers Ipema and Dawe met at an audition, and it was Dawe who asked Ipema to write the one-woman “Sex and the City” parody. She had never written or performed in a one-woman show before.
Out of the four main characters, Ipema considers herself “a Carrie with a Miranda rising.”
