About Rose

What does it take to survive? Maureen Lipman stars in Rose, a powerful drama that explores the events that shaped 20th-century history. Join Rose in her fight and book Rose tickets on TodayTix.

Although it’s nearly 25 years since the Rose play premiered, it’s just as relevant today. With the refugee crisis, discussions of antisemitism, and political debates dominating the news, Rose offers a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come as a society while thinking about the steps we still need to take.

It’s also a chance to watch the Olivier-winning actress Maureen Lipman command the stage. She’s already impressed critics in Rose in London, with The Spectator hailing her performance as “a masterpiece — this production aims for and fulfills that [masterpiece] ambition."

Meet Rose. She’s lived through Nazi-occupied Europe and escaped persecution to enjoy her American dream. Her story charts a century of Jewish history where everything changed. But violence inflicted on the weak remained. By the end of Rose, you’ll think about history, memory, and the importance of maintaining your heritage in a different light.

More information about Rose

Throughout the play, Rose tells of her experiences in a Ukrainian village, Warsaw’s ghettos, and life on board The Exodus. Then, as she moves to the United States, she reflects on time in Miami, Arizona, and Atlantic City. While the Rose actress Maureen Lipman’s a West End regular, she’s moved by the Jewish drama. For Lipman, this play is "a mystical, magical, deeply philosophical and wildly funny creation."

This production started out at Manchester Hope Mill’s Theatre, and later moved to the Park Theatre. You’ve not got long to see the show, as it runs for 28 performances at the Ambassadors Theatre.

What to Watch For:

  • Maureen Lipman won her first and only Olivier for playing Miss Skillion in the World War II comedy, See How They Run, in 1985. She’s also starred in the satirical British play, Lettice and Lovage, alongside Felicity Kendal.
  • Lipman also plays Evelyn Plummer on the ITV soap, Coronation Street. She won Best Newcomer at the British Soap Awards.
  • Martin Sherman is a Jewish American playwright. His plays often tackle the Holocaust, notably the 1978 play, Bent, which explored the persecution of homosexuals.
  • Olympia Dukakis originated the role of Rose in the 1999 premiere at the National Theatre.
