About But I'm a Cheerleader: The Musical

Give three cheers for Megan Bloomfield, a headstrong teenager who undergoes a journey of self-realisation in the But I'm A Cheerleader musical. But I’m A Cheerleader returns to the Turbine Theatre in autumn 2022. Book But I’m A Cheerleader tickets in London on TodayTix.

The 1999 But I’m A Cheerleader film is a widely recognised film in the queer community. Fast forward to 2022, and the heartfelt story of a teenager who discovers her sexual identity has earned a new legion of theatre fans. But I’m A Cheerleader premiered at the Turbine Theatre in spring 2022 and is back for another round at the off West End venue.

London Theatre praised the musical in its early days, saying: “There’s a nugget of musical theatre gold at its core.” Discover the best of new musical theatre at the Turbine Theatre today.

At the start of the musical, audiences meet cheer star Megan. She’s an all-American high schooler who is looking forward to the summer of her life. Nothing goes quite to plan for this teenager though. When her family and friends suspect she’s a lesbian — much to their frustration — they try to fix the problem by sending Megan to a rehabiliation camp. "True Directions" will set her straight, both literally and metaphorically, right?

Ruling with a strong iron fist doesn't solve anything though. In fact, Megan comes into her own and discovers her true identity. While at camp, Megan meets Graham, a tomboy who helps Megan understand herself and what her “direction” is. By the end of the musical, Megan cheers for Graham, and Megan’s parents must come to terms with their daughter’s sexuality.
