About Dirty Dancing

Londoners can’t get enough of Dirty Dancing. With its heart-pounding music, thrilling dance routines, glittering pink neon signs and That Lift, the Dirty Dancing musical just like watching the film play out on stage. See every dance step and hear every line you love recreated in the West End.

London Theatre said it’s like a “joyful and nostalgic time capsule. It's irresistible theatrical time travel.” So what are you waiting for? Put your pedal pushers on, and go back in time with Johnny and Baby in Dirty Dancing.

Adapted by Eleanor Bergstein from her Dirty Dancing screenplay, the story follows 17-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman as she heads to the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York on holiday. At first, she’s not bothered by the events and classes but that all changes when she lays eyes on resort dance instructor, Johnny Castle.

Baby’s world is about to change forever in this challenging summer, but ultimately it’ll be the summer of her life. Find out why nobody puts Baby in the corner.

More information about Dirty Dancing

The Dirty Dancing film and its song set the world alight in the 1980s. Eleanor Bergstein’s stage adaptation attracts a new generation to the Dirty Dancing story with its political and social storylines, while also remaining faithful to the original blockbuster. By the end of the show, you will have experienced life in 1960s America and wish you could stay at summer camp.

Watch out for Austin Wilks’s exciting, authentic choreography, which uses 1960s trends while incorporating modern moves. There’s also 1960s-inspired costumes too. Imagine you’re visiting Kellerman’s at Dirty Dancing wear your ponchos and cat-eye sunglasses, and pose with a peace sign outside the theatre before the show.

What to Watch For:

  • The original movie inspired future works. The 1988 Dirty Dancing television series adapted the film with a few tweaks, notably Baby and Johnny not falling in love straight away. There was also the New Kids on the Block song “Dirty Dancing,” and a spin-off film, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.
  • Both the Dirty Dancing film and musical are written by Eleanor Bergstein. She was inspired to create the movie after her 1980 film — It's My Turn — had erotic scenes cut in production.
  • Listen to over 35 hit songs in Dirty Dancing including “Hey Baby,” “She’s Like The Wind,” and “Stay.” The film soundtrack went platinum once the film was released.
  • "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Grammy Award.
