About Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Following a triumphant sold-out season in 2019, the new smash-hit production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat returns to The London Palladium for a strictly limited summer season.

Jason Donovan returns as the roof-raising Pharaoh, whilst Jac Yarrow is once again taking on the title character which won him critical acclaim and a 2020 Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Alexandra Burke will be joining the Joseph cast as The Narrator in the sell-out sensation this summer, with Linzi Hateley playing the Narrator at select performances.

Released as a concept album in 1969, the stage version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has become one of the world's most beloved musicals. Tell Me More

Based on the Biblical story as told in the Book of Genesis, audiences meet Joseph, Jacob’s favourite son. He’s given a dazzling coat by his father, much to his brothers annoyance. Consequently, his brothers sell Joseph into slavery, convinced they’ve got rid of him for good. But Joseph starts prophesying — and a new world opens up. Interpreting the Pharaoh’s dreams and now in a high government position, can he reunite with his brothers? You'll have to book Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tickets to find out.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical is argued to be one of the greatest musicals of all time. It’s been staged around the world and millions worldwide can recite the order of the “coat of many colors.” Now it’s your chance to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in London again.

What to watch for

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber (the Lord) and Tim Rice (the Knight) wrote “Joseph” the musical in 1968, to be performed by primary schools. When first performed it was only 15 minutes long.
  • One of the things that makes Joseph fun is the many different musical styles you hear in the show. There is an Elvis rock ‘n’ roll number, as well as country and western, calypso, a charleston, a french jazz number, and many more.
  • Lots of famous actors have played Joseph over the years and around the world, including Jason Donovan, Philip Schofield, Donny Osmond, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Stephen Gately, Lee Mead, Gareth Gates, and Joe McElderry.
  • The opening number lists the 29 colours in Joseph’s coat. They are red, yellow, green, brown, scarlet, black, ochre, peach, ruby, olive, violet, fawn, lilac, gold, chocolate, mauve, cream, crimson, silver, rose, azure, lemon, russet, grey, purple, white, pink, orange, and blue.
  • The 1991 Palladium production sent the single “Any Dream Will Do” to the top of the UK charts for two weeks. It’s not often a song from a musical makes it to the charts.
