We’re officially just a few days away until Hairspray Live! airs on NBC, Wednesday, December 7 at 8/7c. We’re having a hard time being patient, so to keep us occupied while we wait, here are the five reasons we’re most excited.

1. The cast.

When we say the cast is star-studded, we mean it. Aside from newcomer Maddie Baillio as Tracy, Hairspray Live! also stars Dove Cameron, Kristin Chenoweth, Garrett Clayton, Harvey Fierstein, Ariana Grande, Derek Hough, Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short, Ephraim Sykes and Shahadi Wright Joseph, with special appearances by Billy Eichner, Sean Hayes, Andrea Martin and Rosie O’Donnell. See what we mean?

2. It’s LIVE.

Though it’s on television, you’ll be seeing your favorite performers sing, act, and dance live. It’s basically like experiencing the magic of being at the theater, but from the comfort of your own blanket fort at home.

3. The music.

The original Broadway production, which ran from 2002 to 2007, won an incredible eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score, so in case you didn’t already know the music was going to be good – now you do.

4. The on-set secrets.

Harvey Fierstein sat down with Playbill to reveal all the hidden easter eggs in the set of Hairspray Live! Notable mentions include shout outs to John Waters, the film’s original director, and Dick Latessa who played Wilbur in the original Broadway production.

5. The important message.

At the core of its story, Hairspray is a musical about acceptance and equality, which many members of the cast feel is appropriate given the current political landscape. Executive producer Craig Zadan told reporters, “Doing the show right now, every day on the set, it doesn’t feel like a period piece, it feels like it’s dealing with issues that we are dealing with in America right now. And that makes it more poignant and more emotional in every conceivable way. And we’re all filled with this incredible feeling of, boy, do we need it now.”

Don’t forget to tune in on December 7 at 8/7c on NBC and see Hairspray Live! Follow along with us during the telecast on Facebook and Twitter to let us know what you think.
