The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2001 along the stretch of Philadelphia's Broad Street nicknamed "Avenue of the Arts." It includes two main performance spaces — the 2,500-seat Verizon Hall and the 650-seat Perelman Theater — and is named for Sidney Kimmel, a major donor for the building's construction.

The center was planned in the 20th century as a home for the Philadelphia Orchestra, but it now has multiple other music and dance companies in residence, too. The Kimmel Cultural Center also operates Philadelphia's Academy of Music and Merriam Theater.
