Stephen Schwartz is widely considered to be one of the greatest musical theater composers of his time. His clever wordplay and surprising melodies have lent their magic to many memorable tunes. Schwartz has written the music and lyrics to some of Broadway and Disney’s most beloved soundtracks. Though he often writes for children’s stories, Schwartz never shies away from bringing his signature depth and profundity to the work. Be sure to experience the three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner’s classic musical Godspell, now playing at the Media Theater. Here are some of our favorite songs from Stephen Schwartz.

1. For Good – Wicked

The long-running musical Wicked is filled with glorious music by Stephen Schwartz. Though it’s difficult to choose just one favorite song from the hit show, we chose “For Good” for it’s sweeping melody and touching lyrics. You can get seats to see the the two leading witches singing this earnest and heartbreaking song together from $99 on TodayTix.

2. Children of the Wind – Rags

Rags, a little-known musical about American immigrants at the turn of the 20th century, features this moving number with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. “Children of the Wind” plays toward the beginning of the show and helps to launch the tone and story of the piece. Though Rags wasn’t much of a hit, it was still nominated for several Tony Awards including Best Musical.

3. Colors of the Wind – Pocahontas

This is another song about wind with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, though this one is perhaps a bit more well-known than the previous number. “Colors of the Wind” is one of the most famous and beloved songs in the Disney musical cannon. The song at the heart of Pocahontas won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Grammy for Best Song.

4. Day By Day – Godspell

Godspell was a career-changing musical for Stephen Schwartz. He wrote the music and lyrics to the now-classic show in the 1970 and totally dazzled the world of modern musical theater. “Day by Day” is one of the most cherished songs in the whimsically powerful Godspell, which you can currently see at the Media Theater for just $20 through TodayTix.

5. Corner of the Sky – Pippin

Pippin is another beguiling musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The title character sings this sweeping tune in the musical theater classic, which has received countless productions around the world since it’s debut in 1972.

6. That’s How You Know – Enchanted

Schwartz wrote the charming, delightful lyrics to this song in the Disney live-action musical Enchanted. “That’s How You Know” was nominated for an Academy Award along with two other pieces from the movie, “Happy Working Song” and “So Close.”

7. God Help the Outcasts – Hunchback of Notre-Dame

This number is darker than the usual Disney fare but is a masterpiece nonetheless. The underrated musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame features music with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. While the score to the movie was nominated for an Oscar, the public was surprised when “God Help the Outcasts” was snubbed for a Best Song nom.

8. Lost in the Wilderness – Children of Eden

“Lost in the Wilderness” is a popular audition song from the stage musical Children of Eden. The show about the Book of Genesis features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.

Don’t miss the remarkable Stephen Schwartz musical staple Godspell, playing at the Media Theater from August 4th – 27th.
