Tune into the Antonyo Awards this Friday, Juneteenth!
This Friday marks the inaugural Antonyo Awards, which celebrate the best of the Black theater community, and also Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It’s going to be an amazing time to come together and recognize a season of Black theater talent without which, this industry couldn’t function. The awards will be available to stream on June 19 at 7PM EST on YouTube and Facebook.
Presented by Broadway Black, the awards honor Black theater artists and the community, and the live-streamed event will feature appearances by Audra McDonald, Tituss Burgess, Alex Newell, LaChanze, Cynthia Erivo, Jelani Alladin, and many more!
“The Antonyos honor contributors to Black theatre from actors to stage and company managers, administrators and costume designers,” said Drew Shade, founder of Broadway Black and executive producer of the awards. “Everyone in our community deserves to be acknowledged in what we hope will be a funny, authentic, celebratory event that is for us, by us.”
During the event, four “Kinfolk Awards” (the Lorraine Hansberry Award, the Langston Hughes Award, Welcome Award and The Doors of the Theatre are Open Award) will be presented, and Chuck Cooper will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Plus, we’ve got your ticket to the exclusive online afterparty! Make sure to reserve your free spot, and get ready for Broadway’s Amber Iman to interview some of the evening’s hottest nominees and guests. After, you’ll be able to have the solo dance party of your dreams to DJ Dorian’s tunes. Festivities begin at 9:15PM here.
