The best Broadway shows for date night in New York
Dinner and a show is the classic date night for new and longstanding couples alike. We’re not restaurant connoisseurs (though we can recommend some great theatres with in-house bars and restaurants), but we know shows. And we know that there are plenty of Broadway musicals and plays to choose from if you’re looking to plan the perfect date night.
There are tons of great Broadway shows for date night out there, both comedic and dramatic. And the love songs in Broadway musicals range from sweet to sexy and everything in between, so there’s something for every mood. No matter which of these shows you see, you’ll have a memory in common to talk about on your next date — and hopefully, a person to see your next show with! Here are our picks for the best date night Broadway shows that are romantic, funny, and glamorous.
“What is this feeling?” you may ask yourself while on a date — and hopefully, it’s not loathing. That is admittedly what the witches Glinda and Elphaba first feel for each other, but Wicked shares how they became best friends in the land of Oz before Elphaba was dubbed the Wicked Witch of the West. But even though Wicked is primarily about friendship, there’s romance, too — Elphaba’s budding relationship with the prince Fiyero quickly deepens as he becomes one of her only defenders. Their duet “As Long As You’re Mine” is one of the sexiest musical theatre songs out there, and that alone makes Wicked a wonderful Broadway show for date night.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical
The love story of the writer Christian and the courtesan Satine in bohemian Paris first enchanted audiences in Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 Moulin Rouge! film. Now, you can see this tragic, romantic tale — told with heaps of energetic, glittery showbiz flair — at Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre pays homage to the titular French nightclub, making your date feel like an exotic getaway to France. And with high-energy can-can dancing and dozens of catchy pop songs, you’ll never have to worry about the date being boring.
What’s more romantic than a brief stay in a luxury hotel? Plaza Suite offers that — the three-act show is set in Suite 719 of the famed Plaza Hotel, and each act sees a different couple’s escapades there. One act follows a long-married couple on the outs, another sees a recently reunited pair rekindling a past romance, and the third tells of frantic parents of a nervous bride. You and your date will be laughing together nonstop. Plus, what more could you ask for in a date night show than watching a real-life celebrity couple — Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker — live in a romantic comedy?
See a timeless, classic love story come alive in a new way at Hadestown. The story adapts the Greek myth of lovers Orpheus and Eurydice, and recounts how Orpheus takes a dangerous journey to rescue Eurydice from being trapped in the underworld. What’s more, Hadestown is actually a double love story, incorporating Greek mythology about Hades and his wife Persephone, too. The tale is sad at times, but it’s told with beautiful jazz and folk tunes that will make you fall in love with music, and with love.
It’s the little things you do together that make perfect relationships — like going on a date to Company on Broadway! The show is about the bachelorette Bobbie who, on her 35th birthday, is contemplating whether she wants to settle down. Company is a perfect date night show for all kinds of couples. No matter whether you’re long-married, on a first date, or anywhere in between, this musical showcases all stages and types of relationships. You’ll feel the joy of being alive at this show, and if you’re in the right company, hopefully you both feel the same!
The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most epic love stories to grace the Broadway stage — there’s a reason it’s the longest-running show of all time! The musical centers on a love triangle: The opera ingenue Christine is in love with her childhood sweetheart, Raoul, but she can’t help but be drawn to the obsessive and mysterious Phantom. This Gothic romance is haunting, tender, passionate, and sometimes even frightening, making The Phantom of the Opera not just a great date night Broadway show, but a thrilling date night experience. Let yourselves fall to the tune of the music of the night.
The Music Man
When a date is going really well, you might feel butterflies in your stomach or hear the fanfare of 76 trombones ringing in your head. That’s probably a good way to describe how Harold Hill and Marian Paroo feel for each other in The Music Man, too. One of the great couples of the Golden Age of Musicals, Harold is a con man/”music teacher” who tries to swindle an Iowa city (but is slow to skip town after meeting Marian), and Marian is the local librarian whose plans to expose Harold’s scheme get thwarted when she falls for him. This perfect date night show stars Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, and features plenty of romantic tunes like “Goodnight, My Someone,” “Marian the Librarian,” “My White Knight,” and “Till There Was You.”
