Staff Picks: Our Best New Year’s Showtune Anthems
Even though the West End and Broadway are still shut for the foreseeable future, we’re grateful that a new year has sprung its head. The current situation may seem all doom and gloom, but music can provide the perfect escape where we can (try) and be hopeful for better days.
From that incredible piece of music which stops us in our tracks, or the song that makes us reflect on past decisions, here are some of the TodayTix staff’s favorite showtune anthems that are inspiring us for an incredible 2021.
“Cross The Line” from Bring It On
Sophie, Editorial Team
If I need a musical pep to carry me this is my go-to song. This finale number exudes hopeful positivity and carrying on, matched with a message that anyone can get through tough times. Also, it’s a Lin-Manuel Miranda song that just deserves more love.
“Raise You Up/Just Be” from Kinky Boots
Courtney, Marketing Team
The “Price and Simon secret to success” outlines 6 steps we should all be taking action on this year:
One: Pursue the truth
Two: Learn something new
Three: Accept yourself and you’ll accept others too!
Four: Let love shine
Five: Let pride be your guide
Six: Change the world when you change your mind!
“Six” from Six the Musical
Abby, Marketing Team
The musical Six is all about how some stupid man (okay fine his name is King Henry III) took the identies of his wives away from them, leaving only his story to be told in history books. And the song “Six” from SIX is all about the wives reclaiming their narratives, doing whatever the hell they want, finding success for themselves, and dancing around
in their apartment alone on a theater stage together. AKA: exactly the energy we need in 2021.
“I’m Here” from The Color Purple
Suzy, Editorial Team
I’m sorry that I have put this song in more than one “Staff Picks,” but this song is the correct answer to everything. 2020 was tough but I’m going into 2021 believing and knowing I have everything I need inside of me to live a bountiful life!
“There’s No Business Like Showbusiness” from Annie Get Your Gun
Joseph, UK Ticketing Operations
This song is about carrying on regardless of your situation, putting on a smile and making yourself and other people feel happy. It has a stiff upper lip feel about it. I can belt it out wherever I am and instantly feel happy and positive.
“Remember My Name” from Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical
Stephen, Merchandising Team
2021 got off (briefly) to a good start with TodayTix’s exclusive stream of the magnificent Ratatouille The TikTok Musical. So many great tunes, but Remy’s big number “Remember My Name” is a soaring tune, which Tituss Burgess hit out of the park. While we wait for an official cast recording, we can enjoy the song’s composer, the ludicrously talented Daniel Mertzlufft singing it. Lyrics are by Kate Leonard.
