Here’s What’s Weird and Wonderful in NYC (Dec. 14 Edition)
If you’re looking for excuses for why you can’t go to your friend’s cousin’s brother’s holiday party, or if you need things to do besides eat cookie dough in your pajamas in front of a fireplace youtube video, we’ve got some pretty great suggestions this week. From raunchy Brooklyn nutcrackers, to a live Christmas episode of “Golden Girls,” to cool concerts at City Winery, this winter wonderland of weird and wonderful won’t disappoint.
Burlesque, Circus, Dance
Company XIV is one of our go-t0 holiday traditions because who doesn’t love a glittery erotic take on “The Nutcracker”? Their unique mix of burlesque, circus, dance, and sparkles is just the right amount of extra and impressive AF.
Circus Abyssinia: Ethiopian Dreams
This circus show is the perfect weird and wonderful outing for all ages. If you’re looking for something that can be enjoyed by kiddos and adults alike, this is a great pick. There will be tumbling. There will be contortion. There will be ear-to-ear smiles and probably some cartoonish ooohing and ahhing. You get the idea.
Los Lobos at City Winery
This has literally nothing to do with the holidays but we love City Winery because who doesn’t love good music and good wine in an intimate and casual setting? This weekend you can catch Mexican-American band Los Lobos for some acoustic jams and poetic lyrics.
Street Art Pilgrimage in Bushwick
Whether you live in the neighborhood and have always wondered about the street art or you’re looking for a fun reason to visit Bushwick this tour is a lot more than selfies with cool murals (although, it is that too). Art historian, Tony Huffman, has thoughtfully curated a walking tour that will take you through murals and a few local establishments. Pro tip: This is right by Company XIV so make a day of it and stay for some Nutcracker Rouge realness.
Golden Girls LIVE: The “Lost” Christmas Episode
This loving and hilarious homage to the (mostly) gray-haired gals includes their Christmas recollections. The impersonations in this show are truly special and it’s hard to not leave your Golden Girls experience with an overfull heart after seeing this loving drag parody.
