Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” is the true harbinger of the holidays. Once the famous score begins, holiday magic ensues. Follow Clara as she falls into a Christmas Eve dream filled with soaring sugar plums, waltzing snowflakes, candy canes, and a handsome Nutcracker Prince. From the Land of the Snowflakes to the Land of the Sweets, this iconic holiday ballet brims with delight. Adaptations with hip-hop dancers, marionettes, and even historical figures are bringing new life to this classic tale this season. Check out where you can see the ballet across the country this holiday season.

“Hip Hop Nutcracker”
This rendition of Tchaikovsky’s classic score is set to explosive hip-hop beats. With choreography by Jennifer Weber, this modern adaptation at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre features a dozen dancers, a DJ, and a violinist. Catch the urban-inspired performance on Dec. 14.

“Nutcracker Rouge”
Company XVI’s “Nutcracker Rouge” may not be family-friendly, but it sure is fun. Austin McCormick’s burlesque-inspired production in Brooklyn, through Jan. 13, adds some eroticism to the holidays.

“The Nutcracker” at Ballet Chicago
To see the sugar plum fairies in all their glory, head to Ballet Chicago’s traditional production of the holiday ballet in the Windy City, through Dec. 15.

“The Nutcracker” at House Theatre of Chicago
Ballet isn’t your thing? The House Theatre of Chicago offers a ballet-free version, complete with puppetry and song and merriment for the whole family through Dec. 30.
