August Wilson’s Seven Guitars

Arena Stage is presenting the fifth play in Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle, Seven Guitars, as the second production in the August Wilson Festival. Floyd Barton, a blues singer, connects the lives of seven of his old friends in a play propelled by ample blues music. Change Agent

See a meeting of the minds for the ages in Change Agent, with tickets starting at $54. Craig Lucas’s play imagines a meeting between six historical figures who were present for events including the Cuban missile crisis, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Cold War, letting audiences experience these events as close to firsthand as they can get today.

Daphne’s Dive

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, known for Water by the Spoonful and the book for In the Heights, has penned an affecting ensemble story with Daphne’s Dive. The titular character runs a Philadelphia bar whose regulars are an eclectic bunch of societal outcasts: an artist, a businessman, a biker, and her own sister, to name a few. The play sees their lives intertwine at the bar as they celebrate and mourn there together over the course of 20 years.

She Loves Me

You’ll love the $40 starting ticket price for this heartwarming musical. Two perfume shop workers in 1930s Hungary spend their workdays bickering, leaving them eager to get home to people they actually like — namely, their respective anonymous romantic pen pals. The Upstairs Department

We Won’t Sleep

Lauren Gunderson, America’s most-produced playwright, fuses the historical with the contemporary in We Won’t Sleep, an bio-musical about Jeannette Rankin. She became the first female member of Congress in 1916, four years before women were even allowed to vote. She remains the only woman ever elected to Congress from Montana, and We Won’t Sleep tells her story with pop music to emphasize the lasting relevance of her story and the yet-unfulfilled ideal of an equal vote for all.

The Color Purple 

Alice Walker’s emotional story of the lives of Southern Black women is at Signature Theatre this season, with tickets from $40. Felicia Curry stars as Celie, who is forced into an abusive marriage as a teenager and separated from her sister. In the 40 years that follow, she represses herself and suffers intense heartbreak, but she finds a new support system of women that encourage her to take her life back.

Dear Mapel

In the new play from Psalmayene 24, a man’s journey to unite with his estranged father takes him from Brooklyn to Washington, D.C. That father is the titular Mapel, who is much more to the main character than a person; he represents something greater that the man is looking for. Synetic Theater’s movement-based take on Cinderella is sure to provide an enchanting night at the theatre for all ages. The show is a modern take on the classic fairytale about a young maid who gets a temporary, glamorous transformation for the prince’s ball — but can she still win the prince’s heart when the splendor goes away? The Servant of Two Masters

From the team that helmed a 2019 Helen Hayes Award-nominated adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac comes an adaptation of another classic play: Carlo Goldoni’s commedia dell’arte show The Servant of Two Masters. The plot centers around Beatrice, who disguises herself as her dead brother to collect dowry money meant for her brother’s fiancée, with the goal of using the money to marry her own lover. However, the show is more famous for her servant Truffaldino. A scene in which he runs between two dinner parties, serving both, is one of the most famous scenes of physical comedy in the theatre.

Hi, Are You Single?

Your average patron at the local gay bar, Ryan is a gay man with cerebral palsy who’s just looking for romance. Or at least a date. Or just sex. He takes audiences through the gay dating scene and all the intimacy and rejection to be found there. The show is written and performed by Ryan J. Kylie Jenner may be in this play’s title, but it’s not really a story about her. It’s a story about Cleo, a Gen Z woman who uses her Twitter platform to call Jenner and other white women out for profiting off Black culture and how their wealth is never truly “self-made.” Cleo becomes the target of online hate, which soon spills offline, too. There’s Always the Hudson

After meeting at a support group for sexual abuse survivors, Lola and T made a pact to exact revenge on the people who did them wrong. And they have to act fast, so they hatch a plot to take matters into their own hands and do what they swore they would. The play is about how two people deal with trauma and unleash the full extent of their anger in the process.

Becoming Santa Claus is an opera for all ages that celebrates the spirit of the holiday season. Gem of the Ocean

Goodman Theatre has staged two other plays in August Wilson’s 10-play Pittsburgh Cycle about 20th century African American life, Jitney and King Hedley II. Now, the theatre continues the series with Gem of the Ocean, the first play in the cycle. Tickets are available from $12.50 to see the story of Citizen Barlow, who arrives at the house of Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old matriarch, seeking refuge from the town constable.
