We love all kinds of musicals: new shows, classic works, jukebox musicals, and everything in between. And the great thing about theatre is you can only experience that special magic for a short window of time before the production closes. Or can you? Revivals give audiences the chance to see a show again, maybe from a different perspective, or introduce younger audiences to a classic musical for the first time. It’s a win-win.

Why should you see a musical revival in London? For starters, it’s another chance to experience a musical which you may have seen years ago. Seeing a musical revival is an opportunity to reminisce about past theatre trips and see the same show with new eyes.

Also, musical revivals in the West End typically offer a new take on an older story. Maybe there’s a new ending? Or maybe there are new characters added into a production. Musical revivals shake up the traditions and add new thrills to beloved productions.

West End musical revivals are some of the hottest theatre tickets around. Check out the latest West End musical revivals in London, and book your tickets now.

My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady

In 2018, Lincoln Center Theater presented a Broadway revival of My Fair Lady and earned 10 Tony Award nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical. So it’s no surprise that the musical, based on the George Bernard Shaw classic Pygmalion about a Cockney flower girl becoming a lady, would make its way to the West End at some point.

The original My Fair Lady London production opened in 1958. Then at the turn of the century, My Fair Lady returned to the West End from 2001 to 2003. Now, My Fair Lady is back in the capital, with performances at the London Coliseum in summer 2022. Bartlett Sher’s lavish production honours the original story, and the musical features Lerner and Loewe’s songs such as “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “On The Street Where You Live.”

This adaptation does include an unconventional twist on the traditional My Fair Lady ending too, but we won’t spoil that here — you’ll have to grow accustomed to My Fair Lady in London to find out what happens to Eliza Doolittle.

Anything Goes Kerry Ellis

Anything Goes

Do you get a kick out of seeing West End musicals? Maybe you’ve formed friendships with fellow theatregoers. Well if you’re stuck on what to do, then there’s no cure like West End theatre to cheer you up. If you’re looking for a joyful musical, there’s no show quite like Anything Goes. The 1930s comedy musical sees a group of travellers head from New York to London, but it’s not smooth sailing for everyone.

Anything Goes made its West End premiere all the way back in 1935. Since then, there’s been three Anything Goes West End dockings, with revivals in 1989, 2003, and 2021. The 2021 Anything Goes revival starred Sutton Foster as Reno Sweeney, and if you missed this production, then don’t worry. Get ship shape and see Anything Goes in 2022.

Wicked star Kerry Ellis takes on the role of evangelist nightclub singer Reno Sweeney. There’s plenty of West End talent in Anything Goes too: Simon Callow, Denis Lawson, and Bonnie Langford will also lead the cast.

Before the Grease film starring John Travolta (clearly, the man has a penchant for musical films) and Olivia Newton-John took over the world, audiences fell for Danny and Sandy’s love story in Grease onstage. In fact, the Grease film went on to inspire future revivals of the show: more songs were added to the musical, and the Grease guys were called the “T-Birds”. Clearly, there’s still a lot of love for Rydell High, as Grease returns to the West End in 2022.

This Grease revival marks Grease‘s seventh time in the West End! Since the Grease West End premiere in 1973, there’s been many West End revivals: different productions of Grease opened in 1979, 1993, 2001, 2002, and 2007. However, if you’re looking for a rock-hard Grease with grit, glamour and leather, this Grease is the show for you.

Listen out for all the big songs like “Summer Nights” and “Greased Lightning,” as well as an appearance from Peter Andre as Vince Fontaine. Grease tickets are what you need, oh yes indeed!

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing

It’s 45 years since we first saw Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the Dirty Dancing film. The infamous Dirty Dancing scenes hold a place in our hearts: the watermelon, the first dance, and that lift. Unfortunately, we can’t visit the Kellerman’s holiday camp in real life, but the next best thing is available in London — tickets to the Dirty Dancing musical in the West End.

Join Frances “Baby” Houseman and Johnny Castle during the summer of their lives in Dirty Dancing. The musical is set to the iconic 1970s score including “Hungry Eyes” and “Hey Baby, Do You Love Me?” Go on, have the time of your life at the theatre. We dare you.

Jennifer Saunders

Sister Act

Look out, there’s a new Sister Act in town! The 1992 Sister Act film glamourised the nun lifestyle, especially when disco diva Deloris Van Cartier encouraged her fellow sisters to raise their voices. The gospel musical film lent itself perfectly to the stage, and Pasadena Playhouse christened the world premiere of the Sister Act musical in 2006. Sister Act then came to the West End in 2009, with Patina Miller and then Whoopi Goldberg (who starred in the same role in the film) playing Deloris Van Cartier on stage. This summer, get ready for a new chapter in the Sister Act story, thanks to a new Sister Act revival coming in 2022.

The new, reworked Sister Act sees Deloris Van Cartier played by an older actress, with casting details to be revealed. Jennifer Saunders will play the Mother Superior in Sister Act. Sister Act isn’t in London for long, so book your tickets now for this fabulous musical.
