What is TikTok? Sure, it’s a social media app. People can share videos ranging from 15 seconds to 10 minutes about anything they wish. Post a TikTok video which is seen by millions of people, and your online career can begin in style. But for the vast majority of people, TikTok is an app of escapism, providing joy and an infinite vat of videos.

Being on TikTok isn’t something to be embarrassed about. Over 800 million users post billions of videos on the app each month. Many videos share the same music, allowing users to feel as if they’re part of an online community. If a sound is used often enough, it will go “viral.” Everyone’s For You Page (FYP for short) shows a slightly different mix of videos, based on likes and engagement. Some sounds are extremely popular, and a fair few of them are from musicals, too.

Here are some of the trending TikTok musical theatre sounds taking over our FYPs.

“Meant to be Yours” from Heathers

Heathers music was poised for TikTok virality. The cult musical was a hit with teenagers off Broadway and now in the West End, and budding performers on the app often sing the new songs in the West End production. But it’s Jamie Muscato’s rendition of “Meant to Be Yours” which took over TikTok and become a popular sound.

Jamie Muscato played J.D. in the original London cast of Heathers at The Other Palace and at Theatre Royal Haymarket. The video above has nearly seven million views, and the video’s popularity has put the song in the “Spotify Viral” playlist. Not bad for a 30-second clip.

“Naughty” from Matilda the Musical

We’re not sure how “Naughty” from Matilda became so popular on TikTok. But all of a sudden, hundreds of people now claim to have played Matilda Wormwood in productions of Matilda around the world. People are joining in with the trend whether they were a fan of the show, wished they could play Matilda, or actually did lead the cast as a child actor.

“Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” from Mamma Mia!

Every day is an excellent day to listen to ABBA songs. And now, the incessant hours of scrolling on TikTok come with an ABBA soundtrack, as the song “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” is now TikTok viral. In particular, the line “How old are you? I’m 20” gained notoriety, with people using it for as a sound for their 20th birthday, or to show the age difference between friends, family, and coworkers. Listen out for this line in the Mamma Mia! musical.

“The Phantom of the Opera” from The Phantom of the Opera

There are plenty of TikTok remixes across the app. To create a remix, users combine two popular songs together to see if they mash up. Occasionally, they don’t work, or they struggle to gain an audience. Other times, TikTok remixes are simply inspired. After Andrew Lloyd Webber DJed at the Broadway reopening of The Phantom of the Opera, this mashup of musical theatre and Nicki Minaj deserves a rightful place on this list.

“All You Wanna Do” from Six

Six retells the stories of Henry VIII’s sextet of wives. The fifth wife, Katherine Howard, sings about her woes with men and what eventually led her to marrying the Tudor monarch. However, the TikTok community has revamped the song, taking the line “yeah that didn’t work out” to show different hobbies they’ve tried. Not everything works out in the end, and that’s ok.
