Welcome to our Chicago Insider Spotlight, where we profile Chicago residents & TodayTix aficionados about why they love Chicago theater. Think of it like consulting your cool, knowledgeable friend about everything to see and do in Chicago. Read on for Michael’s thoughts on how to have a romantic evening in the Windy City, exciting productions coming up, and what Cats means to him.

Meet Michael Marino: Michael is a Creative Director living in Edgewater.

TodayTix: Why do you love theater in Chicago?
Michael: I love the variety of Chicago theater. On any given night, theater fans have their pick of touring Broadway productions, award-winning regional theater and our beloved store-front houses. It’s quite unique and special.

TodayTix: If you had a friend looking for a date night recommendation — what theater company would you recommend they check out?
Michael: I’m a musical fan first and foremost and think that’s great for a date night. Which leads me to my recommendation–Porchlight Music Theatre in Lakeview. If a play is more your speed, I’d recommend seeing a show at Steppenwolf or Goodman.

TodayTix: Can you tell us about a recent theater experience you had that inspired you?
Michael: I haven’t stopped thinking about Gloria since I saw it at the Goodman. I didn’t know very much about it going in and sat in the theater for two hours with my jaw on the floor. I also just saw Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly! and frankly will never be the same again. My theater-going experiences might have peaked that night (and I’m totally fine with that.)

TodayTix: Are there any shows you’re particularly looking forward to this season?
Michael: I am really excited the Goodman is bringing Ivo Van Hove’s View From the Bridge to Chicago. I’m also looking forward to Ragtime at the Griffin Theatre.

TodayTix: What was the first show you ever saw?
Michael: My Godmother took me to see a touring production of Cats when I was four. That show will always hold a special place in my heart even though I’m more of a dog person.
