In 1991, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, riots made national headlines and pointed to the continuing friction in racial and cultural relations across America. Questions about who bears responsibility flooded the media.
Drawing verbatim from a series of over fifty interviews, Anna Deveare Smith’s Fires in the Mirror is a theatrical event distilling the lives and voices of twenty-six of the survivors and cultural icons of that time into a visionary amalgam. How can we see our differences as a means of connection rather than a tool for division? How do we responsibly and compassionately hold multiple truths? These questions and more will linger with you long after the lights go down on this play.
