About Spring Hill Arts Gathering: Movement & Expression

Spring Hill Arts Gathering aka SHAG welcomes you to explore and engage with public programs that connect artists with nature, nurture diverse perspectives through creative collaborations and conversations, and share abundance within the Washington, CT community.

Movement & Expression seeks to connect the SHAG community with an appreciation for dance and will include performances by rebellious and modern Pilobolus, and Connecticut Ballet performing their program Ballet Under the Stars. Music from the Sole will explore their identity as both a dance company and a band, while interdisciplinary duo Brother(hood) Dance! will perform danced of freedom. Herbalist by day and DJ by night, Doctor Arvolyn Hill will bring her signature spinning hula hoops and unique dance interpretations to the SHAG DJ booth.

Please note that admission for children under 12 is free.

Pilobolus

Pilobolus is a rebellious dance company that shares its hometown of Washington, CT with SHAG. Since 1971, Pilobolus has tested the limits of human physicality to explore the beauty and the power of connected bodies. They continue to bring this tradition to global audiences through our post-disciplinary collaborations with some of the greatest influencers, thinkers, and creators in the world. In its 50 years, Pilobolus has created and toured over 120 pieces of repertory to more than 65 countries. Pilobolus was featured on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, NBC’s TODAY Show, MTV’s Video Music Awards, The Harry Connick Show, ABC’s The Chew, and the CW Network’s Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Pilobolus has been recognized with many prestigious honors, including a TED Fellowship, a 2012 Grammy® Award Nomination, a Primetime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Programming, and several Cannes Lion Awards at the International Festival of Creativity. In 2015, Pilobolus was named one of Dance Heritage Coalition’s “Irreplaceable Dance Treasures”. The Company has collaborated with more than 75 brands and organizations in finance, retail, media, fashion, sports, and more to create bespoke performances for television, film, and live events.

Brother(hood) Dance!

Brother(hood) Dance! is a 2020 Bessies Honoree of the NY Dance and Performance Awards for Afro/Solo/Man. As an interdisciplinary duo, they seek to inform audiences on the sociopolitical and environmental injustices from a global perspective, bringing clarity to the same-gender-loving African-American experience in the 21st century. Brother(hood) Dance! was formed in April 2014 to research, create and perform dances of freedom, created by Orlando Zane Hunter, Jr. and Ricarrdo Valentine. Together, they have performed at FiveMyles, Center for Performance Research, B.A.A.D! (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance), VCU-The Grace Street Theater, DraftWork at St. Mark's Church, JACK, Movement Research at Judson Church, Colby College, Denmark Arts Center, Universidad de las Américas Puebla/Performática in Mexico, Escuela Profesional de Danza de Mazatlán/Viso Festival in Mexico, Jean-Rene Delsolins Institute (HT), and other venues.

Connecticut Ballet

Connecticut Ballet’s Ballet Under The Stars includes classical and contemporary works by Jolet Creary, Eve Chan, Nicole Tongue, Marden Ramos, and company Artistic Director Brett Raphael. Created in a ballet bubble for an online audience, the works comprise this summer’s outdoor performance repertoire. Connecticut’s professional ballet company performs annually in Hartford and Stamford. The company’s repertoire spans masterworks by Balanchine and Fosse, eight full-length classical ballets and over 60 commissioned ballets. This year’s Spring Hill Arts Gathering appearance marks the beginning of the company's 40th anniversary season. Visit www.connecticutballet.org.

DJ Doctor

Herbalist by Day. DJ by Night. Arvolyn Hill known as DJ Doctor for spinning hula hoops and records to create an unique dance environment that leaves people feeling a sense of community and euphoria, performing at music festivals like Spring for Sound, 5 Senses, as well as weddings and private events.

Music From The Sole

Music From The Sole presents excerpts from existing and in-progress works, exploring their identity as both a dance company and a band, embracing that tap dance is both dance and music. Their performance honors tap’s jazz and improvisational roots, and features original tap music that incorporates influences from Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, funk, and house.
