Exploring the limitless possibilities of the taiko, the traditional Japanese drum, Kodō is forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. The group is known for its dedication to its craft: the 60 company members live and work together in Kodō Village on Japan’s Sado Island, where they pursue traditional crafts as well as the living traditions of dancing, drumming, and theater.
Their latest work, Tsuzumi, is inspired by the collective work and artistry of Kodō Village. The soul-stirring and resonant program honors the spirit of that very special place and celebrates the ensemble’s 40th anniversary. Kodō commissions by composer Maki Ishii appear alongside longtime favorites and new works in a thrilling program that at once looks back at the past and helps build the foundation for seasons to come.
With this group, there’s no substitute for the feeling of the in-person experience. Be there when they fill Symphony Hall with their propulsive music and movement!
