About Kinky Boots

A fast favourite with UK theatregoers, Kinky Boots won three Olivier Awards for Best New Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Actor in a Musical. This year sees Emmerdale star Verity Rushworth joining the cast along with Simon-Anthony Rhoden as Lola and David Hunter as Charlie Price.

Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. With a book by Broadway legend and four-time Tony® Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles), and songs by Grammy® and Tony® winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind.

More information about Kinky Boots

A high-energy, fun-filled musical, “Kinky Boots” is the ultimate feel-good show. Based on the true story of a struggling shoe factory in Northampton and the owner’s son, Charlie Price. When he inherits the business, Charlie has the bright idea of changing the product from men’s shoes to high-heeled boots after he meets the larger-than-life Lola, a London drag queen. Risking everything for something new, Charlie and Lola’s bold new designs ruffle more than a few feathers, but if they stick together, they can save the factory and their friends jobs.

With incredible music by Cyndi Lauper and choreography by Jerry Mitchell, “Kinky Boots” has the power to ‘Raise You Up’, with its message of love, friendship and acceptance. It challenges gender norms, what makes a man a man, and what it means to be a friend. It reminds audiences that you “can change the world when you change your mind.” A Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical, “Kinky Boots” will have you dancing, or strutting, all the way home!

What to watch for

There are a staggering 216 pairs of shoes and/or boots featured in the show - hardly surprising for a show set in a shoe factory!

Lola and the Angels (and even Charlie at one point!) wear the highest heels in the show at 6″, while the rest of the factory workers wear heels that are 4″ high.

Each boot featured in the grand finale, when they are laced up, use 5 metres of elastic as a lace on each boot. The elastic is colour matched to each of the boots’ unique design.

All of the boots have a platform ranging from 1/2″ to an 1″. Some are hidden within the design of the boot and some are more obvious.

It can take up to a week to make a pair of the shoes or boots used in the show, depending on the design, height and the various leathers used. You can see why it’s recommended that there is a 4 month period for making boots for an entire cast.
