O'Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night is a gripping look into a single day of the Tyrone family's lives, which is rife with love, hate, betrayal, and addiction. Financial worries haunt James, Mary is battling a morphine addiction, James Jr grapples with alcoholism, and Edmund suffers from an illness. As the tumultuous day turns into night, the play lays bare their fragile relationships, revealing secrets and lasting resentments.
This landmark new production, often regarded as the greatest American play of the 20th Century, will be directed by the award-winning Jeremy Herrin (Best of Enemies).
Brian Cox, best known for his work on HBO’s Succession, will be joined by Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects) as Mary, Laurie Kynaston (Spring Awakening, Fool Me Once) as Edmund, Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) as James Jr, and Louisa Harland (Derry Girls) as Cathleen.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night was written by O’Neill between 1939-1941 and is widely regarded as the greatest work of his career. It was published posthumously in 1956 and earned O’Neill the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1957. The play also went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play. Other works published posthumously by O’Neill include A Touch of the Poet in 1958 and More Stately Mansions in 1967.
Laurence Olivier starred as James in the National Theatre’s production of the play in 1971, which was recorded and broadcast on TV in March 1973. Olivier won the Emmy Award for his performance. The new London production will see Emmy, Golden Globe, and Olivier Award winner Brian Cox play James in this much-anticipated revival.
